CrossFit Level 1 Coach
Tell us a little bit about yourself:
Kennett Square born and raised! Since childhood, being active and adventurous has always been a top priority and a constant in my life. Hiking, skiing, riding horses, and playing team sports have helped to shape me and have played a major role in the paths I’ve chosen. While attending college at University of Colorado in Boulder, I began to pursue my passion for education, fitness, and the outdoors. Upon moving back to Pennsylvania, 6 years later, I wasn’t sure if I was going to be here for the long haul, or if I would crave the adrenaline that comes from living in the mountains. However, soon enough I realized that the most important ingredients to a happy, successful life are rooted in the people you surround yourself with, finding a purpose in your work and the activities you participate in, and taking care of your physical and mental wellness. Working at Upland Country Day School since 2015 as an English teacher, coach, and Assistant Athletic Director by day, and coaching cross fit by night keeps me happy and busy! Nothing is more important to me than community and being active, and Upland and CFKSQ have provided me with just that, day in and day out! When I’m not working or working out? I can be found around town, hiking with my dog, or headed to the airport for a grand adventure.
When did you start CrossFitting?
I first started cross fit while living in Denver in the spring of 2012, but it wasn’t until moving back to Kennett Square that fall that I became a full time junkie. As soon as I stepped foot into CFKSQ, I knew I had found my sport, and I knew I had found my people.
What got you into coaching?
For as long as I could remember I knew I wanted to work with people. To aid in growth, education, self-improvement. That’s why I got into teaching, after all. When I began training at CFKSQ I quickly recognized the amazing opportunity that CrossFit can create for so many people both physically and emotionally, and I wanted to be a part of it. I love not only the challenges we ask of our bodies during CrossFit, but also the mental components, and the importance of support and guidance from an experienced coach.
Coaching Certifications / Experience:
I got my L1 the summer of 2014
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting?
My health has changed drastically since beginning cross fit. As I became more and more devoted to the training, the more I realized the importance of overall health. I began to focus more on nutrition, sleep, and lifestyle in general. My muscle tone changed dramatically and my body now compared to pre – CrossFit is entirely different. I can see progress weekly when I’m disciplined, and I have never been happier with myself. I’m strong, confident, and fitter than I’ve ever been. Age doesn’t matter!
What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit:
One of my favorite things about CrossFit is how it impacts the rest of my life. I love to ski, hike, climb, swim, and raft. CrossFit allows me to do any of those things at any time, with out having to specifically prepare. Now, I’m always prepared!
Favorite Cheat Meal?
I don’t believe in cheat meals. Pizza and tacos are life. Don’t put a negative stimulus on food just because it’s not green! It’s much more important to recognize moderation, and to develop a healthy relationship with food. It’s something I work on every day.
CrossFit goals for the year?
I consider myself a well-rounded cross fit athlete, although gymnastics is always my weakest area. My goal for this year is to master HSPUs! I want to maintain my well roundness!
Why did you choose to be a part of CFKSQ as opposed to another gym?
There are tons of stereotypes that shed a negative light on what cross fit is all about. What I love about CFKSQ is that none of those stereotypes exist here. The community is made up entirely of families and people with a similar goal: to have fun, and to feel better than they did the day before. The coaches and members alike are completely devoted to the community and to the cause: self-improvement, hard work, and friendship.
