ABOUT Stephanie Adams

Favorite WOD:  I love a good EMOM. They’re usually deceiving and unexpectedly challenging, and I’m always drawn to the variety of movements.

Least Favorite WOD: At the moment, post-2024 Open, I have to say anything Thrusters. It’s all still too fresh.

Tell us about your sports & fitness background:

Growing up I was a gymnast and a diver. In my 30s I decided I wanted to try something new every year, so I started surfing, scuba diving, anything that scared me a little. Then some friends asked me to do a half Ironman. First reaction…NO. But as I considered it and without owning a bike, not having been in a pool in years and turning purple with only a half mile run I thought what else am I doing-I’M IN! And that started a progression of triathlons. Over the next 18 months, I finished a full Ironman and fitness was forever a part of my everyday life. I chose to do it for the camaraderie, but the feeling of accomplishment is something I’ll never forget.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD... what was it, and how did it feel?

I had a friend who did CrossFit and thought I should try it. My first WOD, I had no idea what I was doing. I was following along and there was a strength portion with back squats. All I remember is that I couldn’t figure out why there was so much rest time between sets and why the WOD was so short. I’ve come to love both of those aspects.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)?

I’ve experienced benefits that are both mental and physical.  No matter how I feel when I get to the Box, my mood and energy are elevated before I leave. My primary objectives are to reach new goals, improve myself and stay strong. Consistently showing up is essential to my wellbeing. My body feels better, and I feel mentally prepared to conquer obstacles and thrive. The perseverance required to excel in CrossFit is the same determination required to overcome challenges in everyday life and enjoy successes. The hard work pays off, and I see the results of becoming more focused and stronger.

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?

For me, the CrossFit Community is really important. I’m not sure people recognize how significantly the simplest interaction or kindness contributes to someone’s healing, strength, and outlook.  Every workout is challenging, and the sense of accomplishment is empowering. I’ve always been intimidated to try new things for fear of failing or having others see me fail but all the small wins on a daily basis and supportive community have helped me to overcome that.

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFKSQ moments:

The friendships that have developed in the gym have given me a sense of belonging-laughing together, challenging each other, more laughing and joking as we stumble in our progress and support each other in our goals. There are a lot of smiles even on the hardest days.

Any advice for people just getting started? Don’t be discouraged and get comfortable with the uncomfortable. As you become stronger or learn new skills, what used to be uncomfortable becomes your new baseline. You have to continue to step outside your comfort zone to achieve new goals.

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?

Dogs, Travel, Great Food and Amazing Friends.
