Hometown:  We’ve lived in Kennett for 7 years, before that Orlando, DC, and I grew up in Costa Rica.

Age:  55

When did you first start training at CFKSQ? September 2021

Favorite WOD: Anything with lots of variety.

Least Favorite WOD: Anything with overhead squats.

Tell us about your sports & fitness background:

I played a lot of volleyball when I was younger, and still love a game of grass doubles when given the chance. Other than that, hiking, biking, and running.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?

I first heard about CF from my dear friend Christine Elsen, who kept saying how much she loved it. When I finally got up the guts to try it, I was completely intimidated by the weightlifting and gymnastics. But the coaches and fellow athletes were incredibly helpful and encouraging, and I often felt like I had a personal trainer helping me learn all the ins and outs of CF workouts.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)?

I have gained a lot of strength, especially in my upper body. Coming to CF workouts continues to challenge me beyond what I would do on my own. I have seen new PRs and learned to do some things I didn’t think I could. The supportive community, accountability, challenge, and variety keep me coming back consistently.

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?

I was surprised when I realized that I love going to CF and working out in a group. I enjoy challenging myself alongside others, even with all my modifications! I’ve learned to laugh at myself more and accept that I will never do a ring, bar muscle up, but I can do a box jump, a pushup, and a pullup…with a band.

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFKSQ moments:

The first year I did the 12 days of Christmas I still hadn’t memorized all the terms for the 12 movements and was a hot mess until Everett patiently helped me figure them out. He stood nearby and reminded me of each of them for almost the entire workout! Other favorite moments have been seeing people encourage and care for each other and the warm welcome my husband received when returning to CF after his cancer treatments.

Any advice for people just getting started?

Get ready to feel sore…every week…and it’s a good thing.

If you feel intimidated, push through that uncomfortable feeling, it will be worth it.

Be patient, be consistent, and get to know some people, there’s a lot of wonderful people in this community!

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?  Volleyball, hiking, traveling, camping, spending time with my family and friends.
